I recently picked a new doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing fairly well for someone who just turned sixty.

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I’ll live to be 80?”

He asked, “Do you smoke tobacco or drink alcoholic beverages?”

“Oh no,” I replied. “I’m not doing drugs, either.”

Then he asked, “Do you eat steaks and barbequed ribs?”

I said, “No, my other doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!”

“Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?”

“No, I don’t,” I said.

He asked, “Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?”

“No,” I said, “I don’t do any of those things.”

He looked at me and said, “Then why do you give a shit?”

saw this sign. realized it would be a great icon for forums. photographed it. cleaned it.

Mardi Gras Parade on Dickson Street (Fayetteville, Arkansas)
February 25th 2006

yesterday was my birthday, and it was a good day.

slept in, and went to the Soul Food Lunch at Jefferson Elementary, benefitting St. James Church. Had fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, brown beans, greens, cornbread, corn, sweet potato pie, and bread pudding. washed it down with iced tea.

from there, went to the mardi gras parade (pictures in another post), and then onto Brewskis for a couple of drinks (try the Avery Barleywine aka “Hog Heaven”).

from there, jill & I went to Maison des Tartes for some coffee and carrot cake.

still craving southern food, we went to Catfish Hole and had catfish, hush puppies, and all the fixins.

we left miserably full.

jill’s mom baked me a homemade carrot cake (best ever), and brought it today.

tomorrow, my sister Misty is coming up to Fayetteville, and we’re going out to dinner. Her birthday is ALSO february 25th, but she was born 3 years after I.

man, i forgot how good world party’s “bang!” album was…

big issues over the last couple of days on my webserver. it kept crashing… too many processes.

it came down to a combination of issues with spamassassin and apache.

Instead of having spamassassin called via procmail whenever emails came in, i turned on the spamd daemon so that will improve performance. I also have automatic virus scanning done via clamav and clamassassin. So now, every account on my webserver has spam and virus protection enabled.

after that, i started battling apache. it was kicking up way too many processes, and running the load average up to around 30. I finally figured out the proper combination of prefork, worker, and child settings to get everything to function smoothly, efficiently, and not overload the system.

now things seem to work.

i drove around last night in order to get a good photo of the moon.

this was with my 200mm zoom lense:
