Art Amiss VII

Art Amiss Inc., the locally grown, art oriented collective is holding it’s seventh semi-annual show Thursday September 20th at the Dickson St. Theater.

Art Amiss VII will showcase the work of 30 visual artists, 8 filmmakers, 7 jewelry and fashion designers, 4 musical acts, 2 hairstylists, 2 Make-up Artist and the work of a crack team of installation artists to create a diverse yet cohesive art extravaganza.

The doors of this multimedia event will open at 7:00pm that Thursday. The first 250 guests to arrive will receive free chapbooks, which feature the work of five Arkansas writers, a compilation CD of local music and a catalogue of all the artists, designers, and filmmakers to be included in the event. The show is all ages and $5 dollars at the door.

Art Amiss VII promises to be the largest show yet. The night will start out with local musician DJ Luminfire spinning for the “quiet hours” when visitors are encouraged to view the work of the visual artists on display. The majority of the artwork in the show will be available for purchase throughout the night. Starting at 8:30 Do novan Tippet and his jazz ensemble will take the stage for an acoustic set before DJ Shortfuse takes over to provide the soundtrack for the local designer fashion show. Throughout the evening the films of 8 Arkansas filmmakers will be shown next door in the parking lot of the Ozark Mountain Smokehouse.

Art Amiss was created four years ago as a Fayetteville based, not-for-profit, art collective with the express purpose of giving opportunity to Arkansas Artists. Since its birth, Art Amiss has had six semi-annual shows and several smaller events, sponsoring the work of more than 100 Arkansas artists, writers, designers, and musicians.

The organization’s website, www.artamiss.org, features the work of 205 and counting artists living in, working in, or from Arkansas. Art Amiss Inc has been a fluid organization thriving on the participation of a diverse group of local art supporters over the last four years. The organization was incorporated two years ago in the state of Arkansas and is now working towards earning its 501(c) 3 to achieve official non-profit status. The goal of Art Amiss Inc is to be able to provide as many opportunities as possible to emerging artists in the northwest Arkansas area, as well as the state as a whole.

Last November, it was announced that the Fayetteville school district designated approximately 2,600 square feet for artist studio space in the building that used to be Jefferson Elementary School. This was going to be a great use for an old, unused building, with space renting at $5 per square foot, annually. CHEAP !

I talked with some friends, and we were going to rent one of the spaces for a photo/art studio area with lots of windows, hardwood floors (coated with decades of school wax), and it was going to be a blast.

It was supposed to be available beginning January 1st.

We waited, and waited, and now two months later we finally heard the outcome.

from an email that I received this evening:

The Fayetteville Public School Board voted on a final rental price for Jefferson Elementary. The price they chose was $8 per square-foot. This price includes utilities, maintenance and other costs normally incurred with property rental. They did not take into account that not all of the building is rentable, such as hallways and stairwells. Also there are varying degrees of space quality. The following gives a breakdown of the different qualities of space and the price per square foot needed to match the school district’s needs.

Prime Space (large windows): $15.26 per square foot
Average Space (smaller windows): $9.81 per square foot
The Rest (poor lighting, no windows): $7.63 per square foot

So that’s just dandy. Now the cost is going to be TRIPLE what they originally said. The space that I was looking at is now going to be $954 a month. Way out of my price range. Especially for something in that area of town.

Well, there goes that great idea. Too bad, it would’ve been great to have a real studio somewhere. It sounds to me that the local Public School system has other plans – putting this outside the price range of people who would use the space is a sure-fire way to kill off the entire project. I’ll expect condos to appear in the former Jefferson Elementary within the next few years.
