We went to the movies last night and saw Stranger Than Fiction.
The cast was great. Will Ferrell playing a “straight” role, without his usual comedic asshattery.  Emma Thompson was brilliant (as always).  Dustin Hoffman played a great eccentric literature professor.  Maggie Gyllenhaal was cute as ever.  and let’s not forget Queen Latifah.  I like it when she gets to play a real character.

Parts of the movie reminded me of “I Heart Huckabees” meets “Adaptation”.  Quirky, and brilliant writing, with a cast that can make it work.  Go see it.

The Illusionist (2006)

the_illusionist.jpg

Director Neil Burger’s screen adaptation of Steven Millhauser’s short story ‘Eisenheim the Illusionist’. Eisenheim (Edward Norton) is a magician in early 1900′s Vienna, who falls in love with a woman well above his social standing. When she becomes engaged to a Crown Prince, Eisenheim uses his powers to win her back and undermine the stability of the royal house of Vienna.

Great movie.  Go see it.  Norton is great in the lead, and Paul Giamatti was superb as always. Jessica Biel somehow has Scarlet Johansen’s lips.  Soundtrack by Philip Glass.  Recommended if you like gothic turn-of-the-century romantic dramas, set in Vienna.  Or good movies.

Kicking and Screaming (1995)

They finally released one of my favorite movies on DVD.  I called Best Buy.  they guy claimed that it isn’t being released until Sept. 5th.  Bullshit !  So I got it at Hastings instead.
Kicking and Screaming, was Noah Baumbach’s debut film.

Paralyzed with post-graduation ennui, a group of college friends remain on campus, patching together a community for themselves in order to deny the real-world futures awaiting them. Academy Award–nominated screenwriter Noah Baumbach’s hilarious and touching directorial debut was one of the highlights of the American independent film scene of the nineties, speaking directly to a generation of adults-to-be unable to reconcile their hermetic education experience with workaday responsibility, and posing the eternal question, “Where do we go from here?” Stingingly funny and incisive, Baumbach’s breakthrough features endlessly quotable dialogue delivered by a stellar ensemble cast.

Starring… Josh Hamilton, Olivia d’Abo, Eric Stolz, Parker Posey, Elliott Gould.

Snakes on a Plane (2006)

snakes-on-a-plane.jpg

On board a flight over the Pacific Ocean, an assassin, bent on killing a passenger who’s a witness in protective custody, lets loose a crate full of deadly snakes.

Yes.  We went and saw Snakes on a Plane today. We (Jill and I) screamed, squealed, and laughed our asses off throughout the film.  We even yelled along with Samuel L Jackson to “I’ve had it with these mother fucking snakes on this mother fucking plane!”.

It was a  really fun film.  Don’t wait for DVD or downloads.  Just go and see it with a bunch of friends, and you’ll have a good time.

The Descent (2005)

Plot Outline: A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

What makes this movie even scarier is watching it and realizing just how claustrophobic you really are.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)

borat_poster.jpg

I just watched the trailer for this film, and a couple of clips made me almost choke on my soda.

I love Sacha Baron Cohen, especially the Ali G in Da House movie, but his Borat character is pretty funny as well.

Lady in the Water (2006)
Written/Directed by M. Night Shyamalan

lady_in_the_water_ver2.jpg

Apartment building superintendent Cleveland Heep (Giamatti) rescues what he thinks is a young woman from the pool he maintains. When he discovers that she is actually a character from a bedtime story who is trying to make the journey back to her home, he works with his tenants to protect his new friend from the creatures that are determined to keep her in our world.

I discovered along time ago that you either love M. Night Shyamalan or you loathe him. Most people think Sixth Sense was his best work, but I loved Unbreakable, Signs, and even The Village. Lady in the Water didn’t have the same twist ending as his other films – it had little twists throughout the film.

Overall, it’s a fantasy. A bedtime story. And I thought the movie was really well done.

Paul Giamatti is such an underrated actor. He’s always great in the roles he gets, and I’m glad he’s starting to get LEAD roles.

Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron Howard’s daughter) was good in her role.

I recommend seeing this film, even if you hate M. Night.

J. Michael Straczynski announced a new Babylon 5 project.

It’s called Babylon 5: The Lost Tales.

It will be a direct to dvd collection of 20 minutes stories set in the b5 universe that will feature the prominent characters.

These stories will expand on the characters that were previously established. The only character he mentioned would not be covered would be G’Kar since he believes no one should ever voice G’Kar except for Andreas Katsulas, who passed away earlier this year.

Warner Bros has greenlit the project and he says production starts this September, hoping for a DVD release in the second quarter of next year.

Rolling Stone Keith Richards has agreed to play Jonny Depp/Jack Sparrow’s father in the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Depp’s pirate-captain character is clearly lifted from Keith Richards’ stage moves, so this makes a lot of sense (and shows an admirable sense of humor on Richards’ part).

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Richards would have a cameo role as the father of the flamboyant Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Depp, in the third”Pirates”movie, which is due to resume filming next month in California.Depp, 43, has said he adopted the body language and mannerisms of the veteran guitarist to create Captain Jack’s character.

“We’re all looking forward to the idea of Keith coming in and doing a cameo,”Depp told a London news conference to promote”Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,”which opens in Britain on Thursday.
