at the UA Merchant Fair, one tent had a “make your own aquarium” thing going… you got a lil portable plastic tank, added rocks, and a little plant, and they added water and a fish.

I got a little Comet Goldfish. The fish is named “Sticks”. (or Styx? Hmmmm)

something we wondered earlier:

do fish pee?

Yeah, fishes have very active osmoregulatory systems that involve the formation and excretion of urine. In short, freshwater fishes are constantly producing a large volume of dilute urine because they are passively taking up freshwater from the environment. Saltwater fishes produce small amounts of very rich urine, because they face the opposite environmental stress: they are constantly losing water to the surrounding environment by passive
osmosis. The various sharks and rays have a different strategy for osmoregulation that involves trying to conform to the surrounding waters, in part by suffusing their body tissues with urea (a nitrogenous compound). Even so, they still have active kidney systems for ionic regulation via urine formation.

Fish do actually pee. Marine fish excrete very low volume of concentrated urine that is formed in the kidneys, as in other vertebrates. For the most part though, their nitrogenous wastes are excreted through their gills during respiration.

sigh. i was given two ferrets (mr peepers and goose) a couple years ago by a friend, when he had to move.
i’ve been wanting to find them a good home for awhile now. I love the little guys, but they really needed a place where they could run around, frolic, and get into 24/7 mischief.

So, I found a family that has a ferret rescue shelter. They used to have a bunch of ferrets running around their place (that had catwalks and tunnels setup for the ferrets), and got rid of them when their son was born. The kid is now two, and they’re really wanting ferrets again. It was great seeing the little boy’s face light up when he saw the ferrets, but I’m just really really saddened by the loss of my boys. At least I know they’re going to have a great home, and a good life, and lots and lots of love. But I really loved them, and it was hard to say goodbye. :-(

so, i have this pair of festivum (a type of south american cichlid):

They had a bunch of babies a couple of weeks ago. There were dozens of little fry swimming around in the tank, and then all of a sudden, they disappeared.

A few days later, more babies hatch. Babies swimming around, then they disappear. The parents weren’t eating them, there were no other fish in the tank. Where did they go?

Right into the filter.

So tonight, I carefully took the filter apart, dumping all the water and stuff into a clear container. I grabbed my brine shrimp net, and my eyedropper, and went to work. An hour or so later, I was done, and there are now 60 or so baby festivum swimming around in a hatchling net in the cage.

Caesar is such a photo-whore… if he wasn’t already named, I’d call him “Lady Marmalade”

I woke up this morning, rolled over to find him sitting in the middle of my makeshift photostudio. begging to be photographed…

I have got to find someone other than Caesar to photograph.. any volunteers ?

I had to take kit kat to the vet first thing this morning. she was stiff last night, but still alive, and hiding under the bed.

We think she was having kidney failure, and was going through death convulses and cries while i was holding her.
we put her to sleep to put her out of her misery.

Kit Kat was 14 years old, and the closest thing I’ve ever had to a child. She was my baby, and always will be.

I don’t think I have ever cried this many tears.
