I’ve been using Microsoft’s Synctoy for awhile now to do daily backups of my laptop files to my server.

It works great, for the most part.  But I’ve noticed that with the “Echo” function (which I use), it does make a mirror of my laptop files, deletes any files from the server that are no longer on my laptop, but it doesn’t remove empty folders.

I just found Empty Folder Nuker by Simon Wai.  It’s a great little program, and there’s no installation required !

Features

  • Finds folders that contain only empty subfolders too
  • Allows you to choose which empty folders to delete
  • Uses the Recycle Bin where available
  • Shell integration: right click on any folder in Windows Explorer and find empty folders within it
  • No setup.exe: allows simple XCOPY-style deployment
  • Free!

What a great deal !  Try it out if you’re having the same problem.

Someone posted this site on a listserv that I’m on.

Stay in Sync with GCal and Thunderbird

It talks about an Add-On for Mozilla Thunderbird that allows you to create and use your Google Calendar inside of Thunderbird.

Rock.  On.

This looks like a really good opensource package for DVD authoring.  I found this via a tutorial on lifehacker.

DVD Flick is a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take several video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set.

DVD Flick is Open Source, meaning that anyone can download and view or modify the program’s source code. It also means that it is absolutely free of charge. Several external programs are used by DVD Flick to do the dirty work like encoding and combining of video material. All of these programs are free, some are Open Source too.

Supported file container formats are, amongst others, AVI, MPG, MOV, WMV, ASF, FLV, Matroska and MP4. Supported codecs are amongst others, MPEG-124 (XVid, DivX, etc.), Windows Media AudioVideo. MP3, OGG Vorbis, H264, and On2 VP56.

visit the DVD Flick website for more information.

I just upgraded my laptop to Windows Vista Business and Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise.

I thought Vista was going to take some time to figure out, but Office. Whew. I can see how things are more intelligently organized, but I can imagine that alot of people are going to be seriously complaining about it. It took me a few minutes to figure out where the “Open” menu item was.

I just started using this between a few computers, and it works GREAT !  I have it configured to just synchronize my bookmarks, not my cookies, history, passwords, etc.

Firefox users, try it out !

Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions.

i’m trying out Microsoft’s Live Writer application.

I looked at Nvu about a year ago, and it looked great. Version 1.0 has just been released.
