Eastern Promises David CronenbergRated: R Writer: Steven Knight Date Added: Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: DTS Comments: Every sin leaves a mark. Summary: The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon, whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill, who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova, a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby's lineage and relatives. The girl's personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna's mother Helen does not discourage her, but Anna's irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives - including his own - hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself.

Easy Rider Dennis HopperRated: R Writer: Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper Date Added: Languages: English Subtitles: Chinese, English, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Anamorphic Widescreen Comments: This Years It's Easy Rider Summary: This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman ("The Little Shop of Horrors") to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its original power, sense of daring, and epochal impact. Eddie Izzard: Circle Anastasia PappasRated: NR Date Added: Languages: English Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo Summary: No one but madcap stand-up comedian Eddie Izzard can spin comic gold out of papal history, monkeys with guns, Jesus preaching to the dinosaurs, and cafeteria food on the "Death Star". "Circle", taken from his stand-up tour in 2000, doesn't have the astonishingly seamless free-associative flow of "Glorious" or "Dress to Kill", his previous specials--which is to say, he's only intermittently brilliant, instead of supernaturally nonstop brilliant. We'll take what we can get, because Izzard can slip in surprisingly stinging commentary about international politics and religion, yet his impish smile suggests that he's only pointing out the obvious. He tosses out an idea and then plays with it like a cat plays with a mouse, flipping it around, teasing it out, pouncing, and then letting it go, only to sneak back up on it just when you'd forgetten it was there. Cheeky, subversive, and very, very funny. "--Bret Fetzer"

Elephant: A Film By Gus Van Sant Gus Van SantRated: R Date Added: 02 Nov 2007 Languages: English, French, Spanish Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: "Elephant", the elegant and unsettling movie from Gus Van Sant ("My Own Private Idaho", "Good Will Hunting"), depicts students at a high school before and during a harrowing, Columbine-style shooting. The movie follows one young boy who takes over the wheel from his drunken dad while returning from lunch, then loops back in time and follows another student who crosses paths with the first, then loops back and follows another--all captured in long, unedited tracking shots that are serene and unhurried, even when two boys in camouflage gear, carrying heavy bags, arrive at the school and begin shooting. "Elephant" doesn't attempt to explain their behavior; it simply places the audience back in the brief yet interminable window of adolescence, when life is trivial and painfully important at the same time. Your reaction to "Elephant" will depend as much on your life experiences as anything in the movie itself. "--Bret Fetzer"

| 289 | The Emperor's New Groove | Mark Dindal | G | 2000 | Walt Disney Home Entertainment | Kids & Family | |
The Emperor's New Groove Mark DindalRated: G Date Added: Summary: Originally developed as an epic called "Kingdom of the Sun", "The Emperor's New Groove" lost scale and most of Sting's song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin to "Aladdin" in its quotient of laughs for kids and adults. The original story centers on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of her hunk of the month, a lunk named Kronk (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What's an ego to do? That's pretty much the story and the characters--simple, direct, fun--a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humor of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even "stops" the film at one point to make sure you know the story is about "him"). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine's stuck-up boyfriend on "Seinfeld"), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. There's even a delicious Tom Jones number that starts the film off with a bang. "--Doug Thomas"

Equilibrium Kurt WimmerRated: R Writer: Kurt Wimmer Date Added: Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: In a future where freedom is outlawed outlaws will become heroes. Summary: A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, "Equilibrium" takes a respectable stab at a "Fahrenheit 451"-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression: If no one feels anything, no one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbors. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, "Metropolis"-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed prisoner (Emily Watson). Wimmer's wrongheaded martial arts/dueling guns motif is sheer silliness (a battle over a puppy doesn't help), but "Equilibrium" should be seen for Bale's moving performance as a man shocked back to human feeling. | 294 | Eraserhead | David Lynch | Unrated | 1977 | Absurda/ Subversive | Art House & International | |
Eraserhead David LynchRated: Unrated Date Added: Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: This is where is the Lynchian nightmare began. Though he may have redefined surrealistic cinema in the 1980s and forever altered the face of television in the 90s, for many hardcore fans it is this infamous feature film debut that is David Lynch's crowning achievement. Many words have been used to describe "Eraserhead" (weird, bizarre, frustrating, enlightening, significant, unwatchable, meaningless, and momentous), but there is no denying it is completely unforgettable. As a surreal work of art, "Eraserhead" easily holds it own next to the works as Buñuel, Cocteau, and Dali. And like many surrealistic works, there is no clear answer on what "Eraserhead" "means." But, if you are trying to find a simple, linear, plot in "Eraserhead", you are clearly missing the point. For "Eraserhead" is not simply a movie to view, but a true cinematic experience, like jumping into someone's nightmare and seeing it from their perspective. Whether you see it as a meditation on the terror of being a new parent, the suffocating feeling of living in an increasingly vapid, industrial wasteland, or a nightmare about the fear of loneliness, the film easily holds up to multiple viewings. And since this film is a dark visual ride and a supreme aural achievement, this long awaited, new transfer is an absolute blessing for David Lynch fans who will finally get to see, hear and experience "Eraserhead" clearly on DVD. Bizarre experiment? Surrealistic nightmare? Or a meaningless cult film? You be the judge. "--Rob Bracco"

Eros Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven SoderberghRated: R Writer: Michelangelo Antonioni, Tonino Guerra Date Added: Languages: English Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Three visionary directors. One erotic journey. Summary: Three world-class directors put their auteurist stamps on this anthology of films dealing with sex, desire, and obsession. First, and best, is "The Hand," Wong Kar-Wai's ravishing drama set in 1960s Hong Kong. Chang Chen stars as an apprentice tailor who becomes enthrall to an imperious, tragically downwardly mobile courtesan (Gong Li). During their first meeting, she takes a hands-on interest in his sexual initiation, explaining that the memory will inspire him to make beautiful clothes for her. Steven Soderbergh lightens the mood with "Equilibrium," starring Robert Downey Jr. as a very anxious 1950s adman relating a curious dream to a very distracted psychiatrist (the always wonderful Alan Arkin). Last, and sadly, least, is Michelangeolo Antonioni's "The Dangerous Thread of Things" about an estranged couple, a tryst, and dancing nude on the beach. A world away from such towering masterworks as "L'Aventura", it's elusive and pretentious, almost like an "SCTV" parody of 1960s foreign films. But here, for the more prurient viewers, is the earthy, gratuitious nudity and frolicking sex for which one might desire in a movie titled "Eros". "--Donald Liebenson"

| 296 | Escape from New York | John Carpenter | John Carpenter, Nick Castle | R | 1981 | MGM (Video & DVD) | Action & Adventure |
Escape from New York John CarpenterRated: R Writer: John Carpenter, Nick Castle Date Added: Languages: English Subtitles: French, Spanish Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo Picture Format: Anamorphic Widescreen Comments: The world's greatest leader is a hostage in the most dangerous place on Earth. Now only the deadliest man alive can save him. Summary: In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell put his Disney days behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer-director John Carpenter's better brainless escapes. There are snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied and unusual supporting cast (watch for Ernest Borgnine as a cabdriver). Followed in 1996 by Carpenter's overdone and campy "Escape from L.A." "--Rochelle O'Gorman"

| 297 | Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind | Michel Gondry | R | 2004 | Universal Studios | Comedy | |
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Michel GondryRated: R Date Added: Languages: English, French Subtitles: French, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman ("Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation") has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. "--Bret Fetzer"

| 298 | The Evil Dead | Unrated | 1983 | Starz / Anchor Bay | Horror | ||
The Evil DeadRated: Unrated Date Added: 02 Nov 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. "The Evil Dead" lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--"Evil Dead 2" and "Army of Darkness"--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget. "--Simon Leake"

Exorcist William FriedkinRated: R Date Added: Languages: English Subtitles: French, Portuguese Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Anamorphic Widescreen Summary: Director William Friedkin was a hot ticket in Hollywood after the success of "The French Connection", and he turned heads (in more ways than one) when he decided to make "The Exorcist" as his follow-up film. Adapted by William Peter Blatty from his controversial bestseller, this shocking 1973 thriller set an intense and often-copied milestone for screen terror with its unflinching depiction of a young girl (Linda Blair) who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow are perfectly cast as the priests who risk their sanity and their lives to administer the rites of demonic exorcism, and Ellen Burstyn plays Blair's mother, who can only stand by in horror as her daughter's body is wracked by satanic disfiguration. One of the most frightening films ever made with a soundtrack that's guaranteed to curl your blood, "The Exorcist" was mysteriously plagued by troubles during production, and the years have not diminished its capacity to disturb even the most stoical viewers. Don't say you weren't warned! "--Jeff Shannon"

Eyes Wide Shut Stanley KubrickRated: NC-17 Date Added: Languages: English Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: While one of the slower films kubrick has made this is still a great film. The CG fig leaves covering the nude scenes have been removed. The fuss was over nothing. I have literally seen more nudity on bus ads. The film has a dreamy cyclical quality to it. It has grown on me and continues to give me food for thought as time goes on. This film is still way better than most films that get made. The orgy scene and the scenes that follow are as scary and thrilling as anythging I have ever seen. |
