Exciting! _Big Star planning to write new song for tribute album_ By Jody Callahan (reprinted without permission) For the first time in two decades, there will be new music from Big Star. The legendary Memphis band, which has reunited for several concerts in the past few years, will write and record a new song for this fall's tribute record. "I had a strong desire to do a new Big Star song," said drummer Jody Stephens, who joins original band member Alex Chilton in the reunited group. To make up for the absence of original members Chris Bell and Andy Hummel, Stephens and Chilton are joined by Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies. "It's interesting when you go to write a song like that. Alex has a solo career now, and that's defined by a particular style of music that differs from what Big Star was doing. It could be that Alex was waiting for the right moment to write this song," Stephens added. Also, Stephens said the roster for the tribute album is nearly complete. According to Stephens, the unnamed record will have at least 11 songs, including the new Big Star song. Confirmed acts and songs are: Gin Blossoms, "Back of a Car"; Matthew Sweet with Stephens on drums and R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, "The Ballad of El Goodo"; The Posies, "What's Going Ahn"; Juliana Hatfield, "Don't Lie To Me"; Teenage Fanclub, "Jesus Christ"; The Idle Wilds, "You Get What You Deserve"; and Kelly Willis, "When My Baby's Beside Me." Stephens hopes the record will be available by October.
