From: Jon Johnson (76614.3063@compuserve.com) Subject: "Beale St. Green" Not to comment one way or the other on the morality of bootlegs, but I found this in the new (Feb. '96) issue of "I.C.E.," which is a monthly magazine which gives previews of upcoming new releases. It also has a regular feature called "Going Underground," which passes on news of new bootleg releases. The following comes from that section: "The long-awaited new titles from Balboa [one of many bootleg labels] are finally here. For Big Star fans, 'Beale St. Green' should be warmly welcomed. It opens with alternate takes of 'In the Street' from '#1 Record,' but the key material on the 22-track, 75-minute CD are top-quality stereo rehearsals recorded prior to the band's WLIR broadcast in 1974 (which was released officially on 'Big Star Live'). The rehearsal includes chit-chat between tracks and even a snippet of 'Hey Joe.' 'Beale St. Green' is filled out by Alex Chilton's 1977 demos for Elektra and outtakes from 'Like Flies On Sherbert.'" Yeah, I'm sure I'll be looking for this, as will many other list members, but please don't innundate me with requests as to how to get it. Unlike my recent posting on the Coke commercials C.D., I don't have this yet, haven't had a chance to look for it, and haven't heard it. "I.C.E." is usually pretty reliable with any praise they hand out, though, so it's probably worth taking a risk on. Happy hunting, y'all! September Gurls Tracks 3 thru 10 are listed as WLIR rehearsals, and they are a revelation. Amazing performances. 11 thru 16 are Elektra demos, decent quality, and still some amazing songs. 17-19 are from the Holsapple session, definitely starting to get a little ragged. 20 and 21 I believe are Flies On Sherbert demos, and 22 is live at the Ocean Club with the DB's. Nice packaging, overall very good sound quality. Highly recommended!
