Recordings LENGTH: 179 words BYLINE: Mark Caro BODY: Jellyfish Spilt Milk (Charisma) **1/2 The '60s-via-'70s approach of Jellyfish's 1990 debut, "Bellybutton," seems downright muted next to the highly accomplished time-warp detailing of "Spilt Milk," which features harpsichords, strings, claps, bouncy pianos, sleigh bells and various silly noi ses weaving their way through a remarkably clear mix. Add Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning's truckload of sing-along hooks, and "Spilt Milk" should herald a most welcome return of pop's more inventive, melodic days. And yet is facsimile Queen ("Joining a Fa n Club," "All Is Forgiven") such an accomplishment? Is it possible for "The Ghost at Number One" to cram in just a few more Beach Boys/"Pet Sounds" touches? Is there really a song here called "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late"? Pop's greatest groups have be en about more than just craftsmanship, and they didn't require the listener to expend so much energy discerning between the homage and the fromage.
