EN9 LENGTH: 1694 words HEADLINE: STING DROPS THE PRETENSE, PICKS UP NEW APPEAL BYLINE: David Barton BODY: JELLYFISH * * Spilt Milk Virgin Records Jellyfish's first album survived its many blatant Beatleisms with consistently strong songs that were played and sung well. But this Bay Area trio's second album stoops beneath the Beatles to borrow from Supertramp and Queen at its most bombastic, which may be fascinating listening at first, but quickly grows irritating. Rather than grow into its own style and personality, Jellyfish seems content to refine its gimmickry, with genuine expression being the main casualty. (And the songs aren't much, either) . Rating key: Four stars, excellent; three stars, good; two stars, fair; one star, poor.
