From: Ken West Subject: Sony press release Just got this from the Sony dish mailer; TEENAGE FANCLUB RETURN TO NORTH AMERICA Scotland's Teenage Fanclub, one of the most respected groups on the international AltRock scene, is coming to America this summer to play a series of select dates with Radiohead beginning July 26 in San Francisco (see itinerary attached). The eagerly-anticipated Teenage Fanclub tour will take place as the group's fifth full-length album and debut on Creation/Columbia Records, SONGS FROM NORTHERN BRITAIN hits stateside stores on July 29. >From moment of the group's inception in 1990, Teenage Fanclub's "wonderfully rich blend of loud, layered guitar and raggedly handsome harmony vocals" (Trouser Press Guide) has brought them critical and popular acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque was named "Album Of The Year" by Spin magazine in 1991 and drew a wide range of mainstream and underground accolades. Request magazine's Jim DeRogatis reveled in Teenage Fanclub's "...haunting melodies lurking in the band's swirling guitar drones with the addition of cello, violin, layered backing vocals, and electric guitars altered to sound like bagpipes." Teenage Fanclub's next album, Thirteen, expanded the group's reputation as a pop music force to be reckoned with. Michael Azerrad, writing for Rolling Stone, called the album "...even sweeter than its predecessor.... the guitars are more meticulously massed, and the Fanclub have beefed up their dulcet harmonies...." while Neil Strauss, scribing for Details, noted that while "...navigating the choppy waters between adolescent fantasy and adult ambition, they turn half-satirical tributes into engaging, original tunes." By 1995, Teenage Fanclub hit another high-point with Grand Prix, which the San Francisco Examiner's Gina Arnold, in a four-star review, recommended "...for those untrendy souls who still like 'Penny Lane'-era Beatles, the Bluebells, Big Star and the Byrds, Grand Prix is a must-own record." Dan Epstein, in the Los Angeles Reader, made these observations: "Grand Prix features thirteen examples of what the Fannies do best: earnestly tuneful, stick-to-the-brain songs that sound like Neil Young, the Byrds, and Badfinger, all gathered 'round the hookah and trying their collective hand at the J. Mascis songbook. As with each of the band's previous records, it takes a while for the songs on Grand Prix to emerge individually from TFC's sensual wash of guitars and harmonies. But, once the hooks kick in, they're positively addictive." A live band of considerable power and presence, Teenage Fanclub, while generally booked as headliners, have toured with the likes of Nirvana and Sonic Youth. With SONGS FROM NORTHERN BRITAIN arriving later this month as a worthy next chapter in musical saga of Teenage Fanclub, the group's American fans have ample reason to for excitement as TFC come back to the states for their first tour in two years.
