The coming together of Umajets has Beatles sound back in business BYLINE: Doug Hamilton; STAFF WRITER BODY: Though it's not exactly Metallica meets ABBA, the two founding members of the Atlanta quintet Umajets do come from rather disparate musical backgrounds. As lead singer for the local group Hollyfaith during the late '80s and early '90s, Rob Aldridge presided over a dreamy, dour Anglo-pop sound that at times recalled the Psychedelic Furs and the Smiths. Conversely, guitarist Tim Smith's old outfit, Jellyfish, reveled in '70s silliness, cribbing its flared-everywhere wardrobe from the Bugaloos and at least one major riff - for its biggest hit, "Baby's Coming Back" - from the Partridge Family. Following the demise of both bands, Aldridge and Smith hooked up, finding common ground in such third generation Beatle imitators as Crowded House and World Party. They played together for a time as the acoustic duo Thing 1 Thing 2, then recently updated the project with three more players and a new name. Saturday's Cotton Club show celebrates the release of Umajets' debut CD, "Demolition," an expertly executed compendium of baroque arrangements, exquisite harmonies and false endings a la "Strawberry Fields." What with the Fab Four being back in vogue and all, the timing couldn't be better. To hear Umajets, call Soundline by dialing 511, then enter 8600, followed by the access code 925.
