i downloaded a full concert (video) of the Sex Pistols… 1977, Dallas.
Thoughts:
1. I’ve always loved Johnny Rotten/Lydon’s stage presence.
2. The way he rolls his “R’s” when singing is great.
3. He has horrid british teeth, which adds to the character.
4. Sid Viscious was a twat…. he was there for shits and giggles. He was fricking crazy, and that’s what added to the charm.
5. As far as musicians, the rest of the band WAS talented, except for Sid.
It’s still a really powerful performance, and shines alot of light on the mid/late 70’s punk scene.
This just shows how cookie-cutter the entire punk scene became. The Sex Pistols were the mold
used to form contemporary bands. The Ramones had the same influence. However, the Ramones
catered more to the Velvet Underground Art School crowd, while the Sex Pistols seemed
exactly what the beer drinking British lower-class required.
Musically, they were worlds apart (yet similar compared to other genres at the time).
Sex Pistols oozed angst, anger, and annimosity through every pore. The Ramones
followed their well-crafted pop sensibilities with melodies and catchy choruses.
Sure, three chords were all they needed….but they made up for their lack of musical
skills with their beach boys/beatles influences power pop.
